Abalone Drop Necklace

This pattern makes a necklace approximately 16" long, although I'm going off of memory because unfortunately I recently lost this one.

Supply List

1 Clasp

2 Crimp Beads

2 Clamshell Beads (also called Bead Tips)

1 Abalone dangle

4 Gray Rice-shaped Freshwater Pearls size 6mm

84 Round Garnet beads size 3mm

4 Round Garnet beads size 2mm

20 Clear Gray Glass Round beads size 2mm

Enough silver wire to wire wrap a bale around the top of the abalone bead, or a jump ring large enough to accommodate

Approximately 18"- 19" of stringing wire (I like 21 strand wire)

Step One

Begin by first stringing a crimp bead onto one end of the wire.  Make a loop in the wire and string back through the crimp bead.  Pull the wire loop very tight and try to make it small enough to fit inside the clamshell bead.  Crimp.

Step Two

String the clamshell bead onto the wire, closing it around the small loop and crimp bead.

Step Three

String the beads in the following order:

2 - 2mm garnets

Repeat six times:

1 - 2mm gray glass

4 - 3mm garnets

Repeat twice:

1 - gray pearl

4 - 3mm garnets

1 - 2mm gray glass

4 - 3mm garnets

Continue with:

1 - 2mm gray glass

2 - 3mm garnets

1 - 2mm gray glass (place jump ring with abalone drop in the middle of these beads if you are using a just ring instead of a wire wrapped bale)

Follow the above directions in reverse order to complete.

Step Four

Add clasp to each end of the clamshell beads.  Each clamshell has a round hook attached that will accommodate the clasps, be sure to tighten them.

Step Five (optional wire wrapped bale):

Using approximately 3" of silver wire, string through the hole in the abalone bead.  Bend the wire in half.  Leaving approximately 4mm silver wire length at the top of the abalone bead, bend one tail of the silver wire at a 90-degree angle, then make a loop (like you would when making earring loops at the top of headpins).  Place the loop over the necklace so that the abalone is now hanging from the necklace in the proper location - in this case between the two 2mm gray glass beads.  Close the loop tight around the stringing wire.  Cut the non-looped wire flush with the bottom of the loop.  Begin to wire wrap the long silver wire end around both wires, keeping each successive loop close to the last.  Continue this until you reach the top of the abalone bead, snip the end.
