Pliers are the most used tools in jewelry making they hold findings and manipulate wire from forming simple coils to making clasps in all kinds of ways.  See also Jan 2003 tip of the month.

  • Flat nose pliers have a flat smooth surface and come in long or short nose lengths.

  • Chain nose pliers are rounded on the outside of the jaws and flat in the middle.

  • Round nose pliers have the jaws rounded all the way around and taper down over the length of the jaws.

  • Crimp pliers are used specifically with crimp beads to close the bead off around a length of wire or cord.

  • Split ring pliers are used specifically to help open split ring findings.

Wire cutter blade densities are different depending on the job they will be used for.  Light-weight cutters are used for bead stringing/Tigertail sized wire, as well as softer wire wrapping wire.  Heavier duty cutters should be used for heavier gauge wire and memory wire because lighter-duty cutters will be dented if used on larger gauges.

Needles also play a large roll in bead jewelry making.  They come in a huge variety of shapes and sizes for any kind of bead threading imaginable.  Needles differ by the type of project and materials involved.
